HEARING CAR PROJECT

Driving requires us to use all of our senses, not just our vision. Because of this, those with hearing disabilities are unable to experience the enjoyment and convenience of driving as safely as others. Our system seeks to display visually the vital aural infomoration from the surroundings so those with hearing disabilities can drive safer than before.

Hearing Car Project: About

THE DESIGN

The system consists of an Arduino Zero, Arduino Uno, three microphones which then connects to an Android application through bluetooth. The Arduino Zero is able to distinguish between horns and sirens based upon the frequency of the noise. The Arduino Uno is then used to determine the direction of the noise. In these initial stages, we used LED lights for testing purposes but intend to solely use the app to display the state of the system for the final product. Images of the app interface are shown below.

NEXT STEPS

This Spring 2018 semester we were able to create a successful prototype but moving forward we hope to condense our circuit to a small box that be attached to a car's back windshield. We also hope to invest in better microphones and equipment that could improve the accuracy of our design. The app could also be improved to more people beyond those that have hearing disabilities and include features such as GPS navigation.
